Why Sports Therapy?
Patients often ask, "why should I see a Sports Therapist and not a Physiotherapist?". Both Sports Therapists and Physiotherapists are highly educated in musculoskeletal injuries, employing a mixture of hands-on treatment modalities (such as sports massage and joint mobilisations), rehabilitation and patient education to focus on restoring, maintaining and maximising movement, relieving pain and increasing quality of life.
In general, a Physiotherapist will view patients with the aim of returning them to normal day-to-day activities. Sports Therapists, however, generally view patients with the aim of returning them to physical and/or sporting/exercise activity. There is obviously a lot of room for nuance within those general position statements - a Sports Therapist will often treat sedentary individuals, in the same way, that a Physiotherapist would treat athletes. Our therapists at seventy9 Sports Therapy combine knowledge from the fields of biomechanics, strength and conditioning and physiology whilst assessing and diagnosing the injury, rehabilitating and prescribing preventative programmes.
There is no right or wrong answer to the question "why should I see a Sports Therapist and not a Physiotherapist?". The best practice is to choose a therapist based on their individual experience and expertise. You can find out more about our team here.

What is Sports Therapy?
The Society of Sports Therapists defines a Sports Therapist who is a member of the Society of Sports Therapists as ‘an allied health professional who has the knowledge, skills and ability to:
- assess, treat, rehabilitate and, where and if appropriate, refer on for specialist advice and intervention.
- provide appropriate soft tissue interventions in a sport & exercise context
utilise sports and exercise principles to optimise performance, preparation and injury prevention programmes - plan and implement appropriate rehabilitation and return to training/work programmes
- provide the immediate care of injuries and basic life support in a recreational, training, occupational & competitive environment’
As skilled musculoskeletal therapists, Sports Therapists assess, treat and rehabilitate muscle, bone, joint, ligament and tendon injuries in or out of a sport and exercise context with the goal of restoration of good principles of movement and function. This is underpinned by knowledge of biomechanics within both a specific joint movement and a global movement context.
With a sports science knowledge base developed during their degree programme, Sports Therapists are also often the link between the different departments of a multidisciplinary team due to their broad understanding of physiology, coaching methodology, strength and conditioning and nutrition.
